Set in the 11th-century Frankish Kingdom, the chapter opens with nobleman Jabbathe leading a failing siege against a well-defended fortress. Observing the conflict from a nearby hill, Askeladd and his band of mercenaries see an opportunity to profit. They offer their aid to Jabbathe in exchange for half the spoils, sending Thorfinn, a young warrior, to negotiate the deal. Askeladd’s men execute a daring plan by carrying their ships overland to surprise the fortress from the lake. Meanwhile, Thorfinn infiltrates the stronghold, scaling its walls and single-handedly defeating defenders to assassinate the commander. The chaos disrupts the enemy forces, paving the way for Askeladd’s band to plunder the fort.
