Vinland Saga Chapter 10 Summary : Night Wake
As night falls, Thors’s longship silently sails alongside Leif’s knarr. Thorfinn sleeps in his father’s lap, while Ari stays awake, observing the sea. He’s impressed when Leif subtly corrects Thors’s course, wondering how Leif can navigate in the pitch dark without any landmarks, not even the stars. Thors warns Ari not to stare too long into the sea, as it might “suck him in.” Ari then asks Thors about what the battlefield is like, hoping to hear a heroic tale and imagining himself becoming a man by taking down an enemy captain. Thors responds with a teasing remark about Ari needing to be strong, as Ylva, his sister, likes strong men. Ari gets flustered when Thors picks up on his feelings for Ylva, and he awkwardly admits he likes her because she’s pretty.
Thors then shares a story about Ylva’s birth. In a flashback, he recalls holding his newborn daughter, Ylva, in his arms, remarking how noisy she is and asking the women present if all babies are so loud. The women panic, urging Thors to support the baby’s head. Thors, dismissive, tells his wife Helga to try for a son next, as it’s what her father, the Chief, wants. Helga asks him to name their daughter, but Thors brushes it off, saying she can name the baby. As he prepares to leave for Norway, Helga calls after him, demanding he name their daughter. Thors notes this was the only time in their fifteen years together that Helga was angry. He goes on to say that Ylva was named after his mother, and this was the moment he began to fear battle and decided to flee from it.
Meanwhile, Leif calls out from his knarr, informing them that the Faroe Islands are ahead. Thorfinn wakes up and asks if they’ve arrived in England, but Leif explains they’ve only reached the Faroe Islands, located between Iceland and Norway. They will stop in a village in an inlet to rest, replenish their water, and trade supplies to make the journey easier. Ari questions Thorfinn, teasing him for believing they would take him all the way to England. Thorfinn stubbornly insists he thought they would.
As the ships begin to row into the inlet, Leif suddenly stops his drumbeats. Thors asks if something is wrong, and Leif responds that the village ahead doesn’t feel right, noting that there are fewer houses than last time. He suggests they should turn back, as the terrain seems dangerous.
Meanwhile, on the cliffs above the inlet, Askeladd’s men observe the ships below. Realizing that Thors’s group has noticed them and is turning around, they decide to take action. Despite being closer than they would like, one of the men orders the others to drop debris onto the ships below, hoping to cause as much damage as possible. Thors and the others look up in shock as rocks and wood fall from the cliffs, signaling an attack is imminent.
