Vinland Saga Chapter 14 Summary : The Sword of Thors
The intense duel between Thors and Askeladd begins in earnest. Askeladd uses the falling spar and sail as cover to launch a surprise attack on Thors. However, Thors dodges the strike, surprising Askeladd, who only manages to graze him. Thors counters with a powerful kick, but Askeladd narrowly avoids it. Askeladd’s men cheer for their leader, confident no one can match him in combat. Askeladd himself is amazed by Thors’s quick reflexes, realizing surprise tactics will no longer work. He is glad the journey to the Faroes was worth it to face a warrior of Thors’s caliber.
Though slightly wounded, Thors acknowledges Askeladd’s strength. He apologizes, saying he must now fight at full power. The two clash swords in a fierce exchange. Thors’s men, including Thorfinn, watch in awe, cheering for him. Meanwhile, Askeladd evaluates the fight, noticing his sword’s edges are chipping from Thors’s relentless attacks. He deduces that Thors’s weapon must also be wearing down. Askeladd decides to let Thors strike his armored chest, shattering Thors’s sword, believing he has the upper hand.
Askeladd moves in for a decisive blow, but Thors counters by striking Askeladd’s sword arm, causing him to drop his weapon. Thors catches the falling sword mid-air and holds it to Askeladd’s neck, completely reversing the situation. Realizing he has been outsmarted, Askeladd reflects that Thors masterfully controlled the fight from the start, leading Askeladd into a trap. He admits to himself that he fought exactly as Thors planned, like a puppet dancing to his opponent’s tune.
Thors’s men and Thorfinn celebrate his victory. However, when Thors hesitates to strike the killing blow, Askeladd questions why he does not finish the fight. Thors responds that there is no need for further bloodshed and demands Askeladd’s surrender.
Askeladd refuses, stating that as the leader of his men, surrender is the one thing he cannot do. He challenges Thors, asking him again why he will not kill him, warning that unless he does, the duel cannot truly end.
