Vinland Saga Chapter 16 Summary : The Death of Thors
Thors remains standing despite being struck by ten arrows. Bloodied and sweating, he turns to Askeladd and repeats that he won the duel, demanding Askeladd honor his promise. Askeladd agrees, swearing by his ancestor Artorius to withdraw his men.
Thors tells Leif to bring news of his death to Sigvaldi, the Jomsvikings’ chieftain, and to say that he was killed by pirates. He wants to ensure that Sigvaldi won’t harm the village. Thors then orders Bjorn to release Thorfinn. Bjorn complies, and Thorfinn runs to his father, crying. Thors pats his head, thanks the gods, and dies standing.
Ari rushes at Askeladd in anger, but Askeladd disarms him easily and punches him. He calls Ari foolish and says that Thors’s death saved their lives.
Thorfinn cries in the ship’s hold, unable to understand why his father gave up his sword or how a warrior doesn’t need one.
Askeladd’s ships depart, towing Thors’s longship. The pirates cheer over their new ship, but Askeladd reflects on Thors’s strength, marveling that he wounded 28 of his men without killing any.
On Thors’s longship, Askeladd’s men find Thorfinn hiding in the hold. They mock him, but Thorfinn furiously swears to kill Askeladd. His intensity unsettles them. One pirate suggests throwing him overboard, but Askeladd tells them to leave him, saying the boy will die soon enough.
Thorfinn, left alone on the ship, cries.
