Vinland Saga Chapter 2 Summary : Somewhere Not Here
Askeladd and his crew arrive at Lord Gorm’s village on the Jutland Peninsula to spend the winter. The villagers, accustomed to their annual return, eagerly welcome the band and their spoils of war. Young boys in the village dream of joining the mercenaries, viewing it as an opportunity for adventure and glory.
Inside Gorm’s home, Askeladd negotiates payment for lodging and food. Generous after a profitable raid, he assures Gorm that his men will be well-fed. Gorm introduces his slave, Hordaland, whose noble lineage he mocks. Askeladd dismisses Gorm’s complaints about her, noting that everyone can be controlled if handled properly.
Later, a duel between Thorfinn and Askeladd draws a crowd. Thorfinn seeks vengeance for his father’s death, but Askeladd easily outmatches him. Taunting Thorfinn, Askeladd highlights his inexperience and lack of control, throwing him to the ground and dislocating his shoulder. Despite the defeat, Thorfinn remains determined to avenge his father in a fair fight.
That evening, Askeladd’s men celebrate with food and drink, but Thorfinn stays outside, guarding what was once his father’s ship. Awakened by Hordaland, who brings him food, Thorfinn startles her with his defensive reaction. She asks if he, too, is a slave. Thorfinn dismisses the comparison, claiming he would escape if he were in her position. Hordaland laments her helplessness, wishing for a place without war or slavery. Her words remind Thorfinn of his childhood, when Leif Ericson told tales of Vinland—a fertile, peaceful land far across the sea, untouched by strife.
This chapter juxtaposes Thorfinn’s internal struggle for vengeance with glimpses of a dream for peace, setting the stage for his journey of self-discovery.
