Vinland Saga Chapter 3 summary : Beyond the Edge of the Sea
In 1002 A.D. Iceland, Leif Ericson entertains Thorfinn, Ari, and other village children with tales of Vinland, a warm and fertile land he discovered across the sea. He describes friendly encounters with the Skraelings, who gifted him his headdress and pipe, symbolizing him as a true warrior. Thorfinn is fascinated, while the other children tease Leif for being more of an adventurer than a fighter. Thors arrives and sends the children to bed, leaving the adults to discuss the worsening cold, livestock loss, and hardships faced in Greenland.
During the night, Thorfinn dreams of battling the sea serpent Jörmungand while sailing to Vinland. He wakes to find Ylva, his sister, sharing his bed to escape the cold. The next morning, while clearing snow from the roof, Ylva discovers a frozen man buried in a snowbank. Thors brings the man, revealed to be a runaway slave, into their home despite Ylva’s protests. She warns that the man’s owner, likely nearby, may cause trouble.
Meanwhile, Thorfinn speaks with Leif by the shore, eager to prove Vinland’s existence by sailing himself. Leif shares tales of survival and hardships, explaining how their ancestors fled Norway’s oppressive King Harald to settle in Iceland, a land free of rulers. Thorfinn, disillusioned by the story, accuses them of cowardice and storms home.
There, he finds Thors reviving the slave, who begs not to be returned to his cruel master, Lord Halfdan. Shortly after, a villager informs Thors that Halfdan’s ship has arrived, searching for the escaped slave. At the docks, Leif confronts Halfdan about his intrusion, but Halfdan dismisses him, demanding the return of his property.
