Vinland Saga Chapter 6 Summary : Messenger from the Battlefield
Floki continues his conversation with Thors in his home. He frames Thors’ return to the Jomsvikings as an honorable reunion, spinning a story that Thors, thought lost in battle 15 years ago, is now returning triumphantly. However, the undertone is clear: Floki subtly threatens the safety of Thors’ village if he refuses. He reminds Thors that his refusal would cause Chief Sigvaldi to lose face, which is not an option.
Outside, Ari, Magni, Thorfinn, and the other village children overhear the conversation. They become excited at the prospect of war, impressed that Thors, their quiet village blacksmith, was once an important Jomsviking. They imagine themselves joining the war and proving their strength. At the harbor, Leif explains to the children what the Jomsvikings are: a legendary band of warriors from Jomsborg, feared and respected throughout the North Sea.
Floki later proclaims that Thors has graciously agreed to rejoin the Jomsvikings, ensuring the villagers hear it as a heroic act. He announces that Thors will be provided with a warship and invites any villagers who wish to join the journey. The villagers cheer at the thought of war, unaware of the heavy burden Thors bears. Thors, meanwhile, walks away in silence, looking defeated.
Back at home, Thors confides in Leif about his past. He admits that he once made his living through violence as a Jomsviking. One day, he grew weary of the bloodshed and ran away, faking his death to escape the battlefield. Thors explains that if he refuses Floki now, the Jomsvikings will punish the village. With nowhere left to run, he accepts his fate and resolves to face his past.
At the harbor, the villagers help Thors prepare his warship. Leif informs Ari that his plans have changed, as he will now accompany Thors on his journey.
Meanwhile, the village children play war again, but Thorfinn behaves aggressively, ignoring the rules. After being “killed,” he continues attacking others, eventually hitting a fellow child in the face with his wooden sword. As he storms off, wiping his bloody nose, Faxi looks on with concern.
