Vinland Saga Chapter 9 Summary : A Trap in Distant Seas
In Streymoy on the Faroe Islands, Askeladd’s band is causing trouble at a local tavern, tormenting a Christian friar. One of Askeladd’s men throws an axe at the friar, betting he can hit him left-handed, but misses and accuses the friar of dodging. A few villagers watch in horror, feeling sorry for the friar. When one of the men asks the Jomsvikings to join in drinking, they refuse, which causes the man to mock them for thinking themselves too good for the company.
Inside a nearby house, Floki and Askeladd discuss their business. Floki informs Askeladd that his band will be paid 100 gold coins upon bringing back the body of Thors. Askeladd comments on the notorious reputation of Thors, once a revered warrior of the Jomsvikings, but Floki coldly explains that Thors’s desertion in the face of the enemy led to his sentence of death. Askeladd is curious why Thors was not executed when the Jomsvikings first found him, and Floki dismisses the question, threatening Askeladd for his boldness.
Askeladd pushes further, asking for an additional 100 gold coins up front, which Floki reluctantly agrees to after a tense standoff. Before leaving, Askeladd inquires about Thors’s fighting style and identifying features, but Floki states that Thors is no longer a warrior.
As Askeladd exits the house, he upsets the barrel of alcohol, signaling it’s time to get to work. He bumps arms with his men, notably Bjorn, who admires Askeladd’s cleverness. Meanwhile, inside the house, Floki discovers that a spear, which had nearly killed Askeladd, had actually killed one of his own men hidden behind the tapestry. Floki realizes that Askeladd’s band is more dangerous than he had thought.
As Askeladd’s band boards their longships, Askeladd expresses his suspicions about Floki’s motives. He believes the job to kill Thors is a personal scheme, possibly driven by Floki’s own spite or fear of failure. Despite Bjorn’s doubts about the danger posed by Thors, Askeladd is intrigued by the challenge and looks forward to meeting the “Troll of Jom.” He hopes Thors will be worth all the trouble.
Back on Thors’s longship, Thors drags Thorfinn down from the mast and spanks him as Hakon and Magni look on, laughing.
